Beginning July 1, 2008, the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) 3.1 will be reformatted from nine to seven divisions and introduced as ARE 4.0. ARE 4.0 will be more integrative and will include six divisions containing both graphic vignettes and multiple-choice questions and one division with only graphic vignettes.
Candidates who have passed at least one division of the ARE on or before May 15, 2008, will continue to test in ARE 3.1 until June 30, 2009. Afterwards, they will be transitioned to ARE 4.0 based on the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) transition chart and the divisions they have successfully completed.
Candidates that are eligible to test, but have NOT PASSED a division of the ARE by May 15, 2008, will automatically be converted to ARE 4.0 beginning July 1, 2008. A new Authorization to Test letter will be mailed to them.
Beginning May 16, 2008, candidates who become newly eligible will test in ARE 4.0 and may start scheduling divisions for ARE 4.0 on May 18, 2008.
Inactive Candidates
Inactive candidates who have not taken a division of the ARE delivered by computer that re-establish their eligibility will have to begin testing in ARE 4.0. Their previously passed divisions will be transitioned based on the NCARB transition chart and the divisions they have successfully completed.
Cancellation Policy
NCARB has established a cancellation policy with regards to scheduled ARE 3.1 divisions after May 15, 2008. Any ARE candidates that have NOT PASSED a division of the ARE (3.1 or earlier) and who do not expect to do so by May 13, 2008, are advised that their appointment WILL be cancelled and the exam fee forfeited. These candidates will be required to test in ARE 4.0 starting July 1, 2008. The California Architects Board recommends that candidates reschedule their appointment for a date prior to May 15th to avoid any forfeiture of exam fees.
