Experience - Requirements for Eligibility

A candidate may use the form below to see how much credit they will receive for their education and/or experience. Please note, if multiple degrees are earned, the degree that provides the candidate with the most credit will be applied as experience earned. Eligible experience is evaluated at the equivalent of 40 hours per week. Credit may be given for overtime. All candidates will be required to complete the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) prior to becoming eligible for the California Supplemental Examination (CSE).

Post Professional Degree in Architecture Where the Program is Accredited by CACB/NAAB with an Accredited Bachelors

A post professional degree in architecture (M.Arch or D.Arch), where the degree program has been accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) or the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB), or units toward such a degree.

A professional degree in architecture, where the degree program has not been accredited by NAAB or CACB and the program consists of at least a five-year curriculum, or units toward such a degree.

Work Experience Under/As an Architect Licensed/Registered in a Qualifying Foreign Country

Experience under the direct supervision of an architect licensed in the qualifying foreign country where the experience occurred will be granted 50% credit. Experience as a foreign architect licensed in the qualifying foreign country with a verified record of substantial architectural practice will be granted 50% credit.

Work Experience Under/As a US Licensed/Registered Civil or Structual Engineer

Experience as, or experience obtained under the direct supervision of, a licensed/registered civil or structural engineer, and/or a landscape architect licensed/registered in a United States jurisdiction will be granted 50% credit.

Experience as, or experience obtained under the direct supervision of, a landscape architect licensed/registered in a United States jurisdiction will be granted 50% credit.

Work Experience Under/As a California Licensed General Building Contractor

Experience as, or experience obtained under the direct supervision of, a California licensed general building contractor shall be granted 50% credit. Experience under the supervision of a "responsible managing officer" operating under a corporate contractor license will qualify as experience under a California Licensed Building Contractor and will be verified by the responsible managing officer of that corporation.
