FAQs for CIDP/IDP

  • Q: I don't have an accredited degree in architecture. Does that mean I can't participate in NCARB's IDP?

A: An accredited degree is not required to participate in NCARB's IDP as a California candidate. Interns who have an NAAB-accredited degree can earn credit toward NCARB's IDP after completion of the third year in a professional degree program. California interns who have a lesser degree or no degree can earn credit toward NCARB's IDP after verification of three years of education and/or work experience equivalents based on the Table of Equivalents, as evaluated by the Board.

  • Q: When CIDP/IDP is required, will I have to complete the programs before I can be eligible to take the Architect Registration Examination (ARE)?

A: No. In California, candidates are allowed to take the ARE upon verification of five years of education and/or work experience credit, as evaluated by the Board and enrollment in IDP. However, most other states require candidates to have completed NCARB's IDP prior to taking the ARE.

  • Q: I'm not currently eligible for the ARE, but I took some exams in the past for California. Will I have to complete CIDP/IDP?

A: New and inactive candidates must complete CIDP/IDP prior to becoming eligible for the California Supplemental Examination and licensure. A candidate is inactive when more than five years has passed since either they were determined eligible or since the last exam they took.

  • Q: How much does it cost to participate in IDP and CIDP?

A: NCARB determines and outlines the fees for IDP. The California Architects Board does not charge a fee for participation in CIDP.

  • Q: If I complete IDP, does that mean that I can get licensed in any other state or certified by NCARB?

A: Each state establishes its own licensing laws, as NCARB establishes its own certification requirements. You should contact the individual state directly to find out their licensing requirements or contact NCARB to find out their certification requirements.

  • Q: How will I know when I have completed CIDP/IDP?

A: Board staff will update the candidate's status as the CIDP forms are submitted. The candidate will need to contact NCARB when their IDP file has been completed and have it sent to the Board.

  • Q: Do I need to submit CIDP narratives and work samples to the Board with the CIDP form?

A: No. Only submit the Evidence Verification Form once the narratives and work samples have been reviewed with the supervisor and signed.
