Expired License
California architect licenses issued prior to January 1, 2025, expire at midnight on the last day of the birth month in odd-numbered years. Licenses that were issued after January 1, 2025, expire every two years at midnight on the last day of the month in which the license was issued.
Holders of an expired license may not legally practice architecture in California. There is no grace period for practice with an expired license. Practice without a license is unlawful and may result in disciplinary action.
The holder of an expired architect license must renew their license before they can resume architectural practice and offer any architectural services. An expired license not renewed within 30 days after the expiration date will be assessed a $100 delinquency fee that cannot be waived. Delinquent licenseholders should contact us for the precise renewal fee amount owed.
A license expired five or more years is nonrenewable. The holder of a nonrenewable license who seeks to resume practice must apply for a new license and meet the current licensure requirements.
