Board Welcomes New Executive Officer

Laura Zuniga
Laura Zuniga

After an exhaustive search, Laura Zuniga was chosen to serve as the new Executive Officer (EO) of the California Architects Board (Board). Ms. Zuniga assumed her new assignment on August 1st. She brings extensive legislative experience to the Board, having worked for the Legislature, she served as Deputy Secretary of Legislation at the State Consumer Services Agency (now Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency), Deputy Director, Division of Legislative Affairs at Department of Consumer Affairs, and Chief of Legislation at Contractors State License Board (CSLB). She leaves behind her Chief of Licensing & Examination position at CSLB, where she worked for more than seven years.

The Board is preparing for important activities including Sunset Review, IT Business Modernization, and strategic planning, just to name a few. Ms. Zuniga is looking forward to getting up to speed and meeting with the Board President and members to hear their priorities and goals for the Board. Ms. Zuniga adds, I would like to help build on the Board’s accomplishments. I am most looking forward to developing a better understanding of the architectural profession and its positive impact on the built environment.

Ms. Zuniga replaces Doug McCauley, who served as EO for 17 years. Mr. McCauley was appointed Chief Deputy Director of the Department of Housing and Community Development by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. and commenced his new role in March.

The Board would like to thank Vickie Mayer for serving as Interim Executive Officer during this period and providing exemplary leadership. Ms. Mayer will work closely with Ms. Zuniga during her transition to the EO position.
